Anthony Abroad: From Teacher in Texas to Trilingual in Paris

Anthony, known online as Anthony Abroad, is living proof that taking a bold step into the unknown can completely transform your life. Originally a Spanish teacher from the U.S., Anthony now lives in Paris, teaches English to young children, and is building a platform to help other Black and Brown educators move abroad.

In our latest chat, Anthony shares his inspiring story of reinvention, cultural discovery, and why he's passionate about making international teaching more accessible to people of colour.

From San Antonio to Paris

Anthony's journey began in San Antonio, Texas, where he taught Spanish in high schools. He was the first Black Spanish teacher at his school and quickly realised he had a passion for languages, travel, and breaking boundaries. After his first trip abroad to Costa Rica, he returned home determined to live a different life, one that involved international adventure and new languages. He sold everything he owned, used the money to pay for French classes, and moved to Paris.

Life as an Expat Educator

In Paris, Anthony teaches English to kids aged 2 to 8 at a bilingual school. While it's a big shift from his high school teaching days in Texas, he's embraced the learning curve and finds joy in working with young students. He notes key differences in French culture, from slower work-life rhythms and the ritual of “le goûter”, to longer lunch breaks and walking to the market with a tote bag instead of relying on drive-thrus.

Building a Platform for Change

Anthony is not just living abroad, he’s helping others do the same. He launched the AfroLingua Abroad podcast and his website AnthonyAbroad.com, where he shares resources, tips, and motivation for educators of colour interested in teaching overseas. For him, representation matters. Seeing few people who looked like him in global spaces made him want to change the narrative and inspire others to take the leap.

Facing the Challenges

He admits the visa process was intimidating, but emphasises that it’s entirely doable, he managed it all on his own. He encourages others to take it one step at a time and not be discouraged by bureaucracy. Now pursuing his master’s degree in France, Anthony reminds us that you don’t need to have it all figured out to start. All you need is belief in yourself and the courage to try.

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s finding a new pace of life, learning a fourth language (he's currently studying German!), or navigating cultural nuances, Anthony's story is one of growth, grit, and generosity. He’s not only building a life abroad, he’s paving the way for others to do the same.  👉 Watch the full video interview below
